Playing catch is something many people begin doing when they're very young, but it's a skill that is very vital to have in baseball and should be practiced often. Make yourself a consistent baseball defender by learning the proper way to catch a baseball throw.

Difficulty: Easy
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Face the person that will be throwing the ball to you. Stand with your legs at a comfortable distance apart and create a target for him by holding your glove up about chest-level. Spread your fingers out inside the glove to open it.

  2. Step 2

Move into position to make the catch once the ball is thrown. Position your glove so that you catch the ball in the webbing of the glove and not on your palm.

  3. Step 3

Watch the ball into your glove and squeeze it closed to make the catch. Bend your knees as you catch the ball, moving your body with the gravity of the ball to maintain a steady position.

  4. Step 4

Turn your glove hand with your palm facing up to catch a ball that it thrown lower than your waist. Catch it underhand, using your free hand to help keep the ball in your glove.

Tips & Warnings
  • Take part in some advanced catching practice by practicing catching throws while keeping your foot on or straddling a base. You can also practice catching while a runner is running or sliding into a base. This will help you get used to making catches in game situations.
  • Always concentrate on catching before throwing. Make sure the ball is secure and under control in your glove before you transfer it to your free hand to throw.
