Step 1
Check to make sure no one else is about to shoot at the target before you head to retrieve your arrows. You should also keep an eye on nearby archers—even if they aren't aiming at your target, an arrow can fly unexpectedly off course and injure bystanders.
-
Step 2
Position your bow so that it leans against the target. If you must retrieve arrows behind the target, this lets other archers know that someone is back there.
-
Step 3
Ensure that you grab the arrow in the correct position when pulling it out of the target. Stand to the side of the target and arrow. Place one hand on the target next to the arrow. Place the other hand on the shaft just beside the first hand. Pull the arrow straight back to remove it. If you pull the arrow out incorrectly, you can bend the arrow or injure yourself or someone else. You may also use a professional arrow puller, available at sporting goods stores.
-
Step 4
Make sure there is no one behind you or beside you when you pull out the arrow. You may have to exert quite a bit of force to get the arrow out and if someone is standing near you, you might accidentally stab him or her with the tail end of the arrow, which can hurt almost as bad as the tip.
