When practicing archery, it is imperative that a bow and arrow be properly loaded in order to shoot effectively and maintain the highest level of safety. After finding the proper stance and making sure your surroundings are safe, follow the steps below to load an archery bow.

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Point the bow down toward the ground with the correct hand. The hand that holds the bow is usually not your dominant hand. The bow is pointed toward the ground when loading for safety reasons, in case you loose grip of the arrow when loading.

  2. Step 2

Move the arrow to the bow on the side of the strings closest to your body. Pay close attention to which way the arrow is pointing.

  3. Step 3

Bring the knock of the arrow to the knocking point, and make sure it is in place. The knock is a small v-shaped groove in the arrow that is used to push the arrow with the string. Once it is in place, tighten it up.

  4. Step 4

Set the front of the arrow on the arrow rest in the front of the bow.

  5. Step 5

Hold the bow directly in front of you at shoulder height with one hand. Keep the elbow turned away from the string. Your arm is parallel to the floor and aligned with your shoulders. Aim directly at your target.

  6. Step 6

Hook the string with 3 fingers of your dominant hand. The hook made with your finger should be deep, with the string being held near the second finger joint. The knock should be between your index and middle fingers.
