The car intake system can differ slightly for each make and year, but generally involves the same disassembly process. You will need to remove the car intake housing and duct work to access the alternator. This is a simple process any home mechanic can do.

Difficulty: Moderate
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Flat-blade screwdriver
  1. Step 1

Prepare your work area before you start. Pop the hood on your car and make sure it is securely fastened in the upright position. Arrange for proper lighting in your work area and gather the needed tools for the job. This will save you time and hassle.

  2. Step 2

Undo the screw on the clamp until it is loose and detach the intake duct from the air cleaner cover. Remove the clips, or locking tabs, and slide the piece of duct work completely off. This may require prying back the inner fender lining, depending on your vehicle.

  3. Step 3

Watch for additional clips, or locking tabs, as you remove the piece of duct work from the car. Remove them as necessary. Loosen the radiator hose clamp on the throttle body and remove it in the same way as the intake duct.

  4. Step 4

Mark screws, nuts, bolts, clamps and hoses, if you are unsure about any of the pieces coming off. It is extremely important to reinstall each piece in the exact place it came from. If you need assistance, contact a professional mechanic.

Tips & Warnings
  • It's a good idea to wear gloves and protective clothing when working under the hood of a vehicle. There is lots of dust and different fluids that could harm your skin and ruin your clothes.
