Hunting deer presents a special challenge because deer have an excellent sense of smell. Any deer hunter knows if you want to get the big buck, you must lure the deer using an artificial scent and eliminate your own human scent so the deer remains unaware of your presence.

Difficulty: Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Camouflage clothing
  • Scent-free detergent
  • Cover scent
  • Scent drag
  • Estrous doe urine
  • Buck urine
  • Tarsal gland scent
  1. Step 1

Wash your camouflage clothing in dye-free, perfume-free detergent. This helps eliminate any odors deer may detect while you're in the woods.

  2. Step 2

Apply a cover scent to your clothing. Cover scents mask your human scent to deer.

  3. Step 3

Pull a drag of doe or buck urine as you enter the woods. You can purchase a drag or create your own. Hang your drag in clear view from your hunting spot. If a deer approaches, the drag lures him into your view while he is searching for the source of the scent.

  4. Step 4

Dab a small amount of estrous doe urine on a nearby tree branch or tree trunk within shooting distance of your hunting spot. Make sure to use estrous doe urine during the peak breeding season of the rut.

  5. Step 5

Identify buck scrapes and add a small amount of tarsal gland to the scrape. Tarsal gland scents indicate levels of dominance between bucks, so adding tarsal gland to an existing scrape can present a challenge to another buck.

Tips & Warnings
  • Purchase estrous doe urine, buck urine and tarsal gland scent at any sporting goods store. A variety of brands and products exist, both artificial and natural, so choose what works best for your situation and location.
  • Use estrous doe urine during the rut to lure bucks to a possible doe in the area, and use buck urine during the rest of the season to alert bucks of another possible buck in the area.
