Instructions

    • 1

Start by blowing into the grunt tube softly several times, but no more than five. Face different directions, so that bucks in the area hear the grunt call. The goal is for a buck to hear the grunt and think that another buck is calling for him.

    • 2

Watch for bucks to cautiously approach. Wait and observe to make sure the bucks are aware of grunting before making a second round of calls.

    • 3

Continue with another set of grunts after 15 minutes. Look for any buck activity. Be careful to watch in all directions. A buck may take the grunts as a competitive call and actually run directly towards you because he is looking to be the dominant male.

    • 4

Call a buck closer if you have spotted an interested deer that's still very far away. Put your hand or coat over the end of the tube call to make a more muffled grunt. Only grunt a couple times to give him the impression that you are getting further away to catch the buck's curiosity and get him in closer.

    • 5

Blow a few quick grunts if the deer is walking past or traveling unaware that you are there. This may get him to stop long enough for you to get a good shot.

Tips & Warnings

  • Wait and observe all areas around you patiently. Over using the grunt tube can discourage bucks from coming to the area.

In my 25 years of deer hunting I can safely say that a grunt tube has attracted a grand total of 1 deer. I have failed to turn a deer or to get one to come to me time and time again. I have experimented using all the advice given by the "experts". Again as is true with fishing lures, grunt tubes are designed to attract hunters rather than deer.
