Motor oil is the blood of your cars engine. When your motor oil gets low you increase the wear and tear on your car. Even if you get regular oil changes you should still check your motor oil levels regularly to help you notice oil leaks sooner. Follow these steps if you need to add motor oil to your car.

Difficulty: Easy
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Buy the proper oil for your car. The owner's manual of your car will tell you what type of motor oil your car uses.

  2. Step 2

Locate the oil filler cap on top of the engine; it will have a picture of a watering can on it. Unscrew the cap and put it somewhere safe so you don't lose it.

  3. Step 3

Use a funnel so you avoid spilling motor oil. Pour the motor oil into the engine one quart at a time.

  4. Step 4

Turn on your car and allow it to run for a few minutes. Turn it off and check your oil level again.

  5. Step 5

Add more motor oil if you are still low. Be careful not to add too much oil.

  6. Step 6

Replace the oil filler cap. Leaving the cap off can create a huge mess and even become dangerous.

Tips & Warnings
  • If you place your oil filler cap over the hole where your hood latches, you won't forget to replace the cap because you won't be able to close your hood until you do.
  • Spilling motor oil on your car's engine will cause a harmless burning smell. Wipe up any spilled oil promptly, while the engine is cool.
