How to Use the New Search Features in Vista

The new Instant Search utility in Windows Vista is more intuitive and faster than those found in earlier versions of Microsoft's Windows operating system. The new utility displays results as you type, because it's integrated into the operating system, which enables it to deliver results as you type.

Instructions

Difficulty: Moderately Easy

Step1
Click on the "Start" button at the bottom left-hand side of your screen. Type the first letter of what you're searching for in the Search box.
Step2
Check the list of files and folders that appears in the left pane of the Start menu as soon as you hit the first letter.
Step3
Continue to type in the name of the file or folder you're searching for. The list changes and becomes more refined as you add more letters.
Step4
Hit the "Enter" key at any time and Vista will load the file it believes is the most likely candidate you're seeking. The name of the file displays at the bottom of the search results pane as you conduct your search. If this isn't the file you're seeking, you can refine your search using the steps below.
Step5
Select "Search Internet" to have Vista use MSN Search to display all of the results it finds in the search pane.
Step6
Conduct an advanced search by clicking on "Search Computer." Use the filter options to further refine your search and even search for words inside documents. You can even use Boolean operators, such as "and/or," just by changing the filter.
