Microsoft added a ton of features to make Vista a viable upgrade from older Windows operating systems. The features you get depend on the version you buy (Basic, Home Premium, Business or Ultimate) with most of the new features available in the Home Premium and Ultimate versions. This enabled Microsoft to gear its enhancements toward a specific type of user.

Vista Basic

Step1
Increase security with Windows Defender, which protects your computer from viruses, hijackers and other harmful files.
Step2
Activate and configure the new and improved Windows Firewall to protect your computer from harmful files and hackers.
Step3
Find what you need quickly using the new, easier to use, Instant Search.
Step4
Browse the Web using Internet Explorer 7, which offers increased security over earlier versions and is able to handle the constantly changing files structure of the Worldwide Web.
Step5
Stay connected wherever you are using the new Network and Sharing Center.

Vista Home Premium

Step1
Check out all the features of the new Aero Desktop, including the see-through menu bars, instant thumbnails of open programs and 3D Flip.
Step2
Use the Windows Mobility Center and Tablet PC Support options to take advantage of utilities developed specifically for notebook and tablet PCs, including the ability to maximize battery life, connect to networks and modify display and sound settings.

Share documents and collaborate with other users with Windows Meeting Space.
Step4
Utilize Windows SideShow to extend Vista to a second monitor or other devices.
Step5
Employ Windows Media Center to display photos and other multimedia files on your television or home entertainment center.

Organize, share, fix and print your digital images with Windows Photo Gallery. This is also available in Home Premium.

Set up rules for children's computer use with Parental Controls, including time limits, access to the Web and games. This is also available in Home Premium.
