Things You'll Need:
- Kayak
- Paddle
- Life jacket
- Helmet (optional)
-
Step 1
Dress appropriately. Consider how warm or cold the water will be and dress with the expectation of getting wet.
-
Step 2
Gather your equipment. You'll need a kayak and paddle, but don't forget a life jacket for safety and a helmet if you're kayaking through rapids. Take a waterproof bag if you're carrying any valuables like a cell phone, car keys or your wallet on your trip. If you're planning your trip through a rental service, they should be able to provide you with all of the equipment you'll need.
-
Step 3
Find a place where you'll feel comfortable and safe kayaking. Beginners should start on a lake or pond where you can practice different paddle strokes and getting into and out of the kayak. Kayakers with more experience may want to take a trip down a river and maybe even paddle through some rapids if you feel confident in your skills. Expert kayakers will want more of a challenge by taking on some bigger rapids or sea kayaking in the ocean.
-
Step 4
Put your kayak in the water. When you reach your kayaking location and are dressed appropriately, place your kayak with half of it in the water and half on the shore. Once you're in your kayak use your paddle to push off the shore and into the water.
-
Step 5
Paddle. Use your paddle to propel your kayak and navigate the area.
-
Step 6
Get out of the water. When you're done, paddle your kayak as far as possible onto the shore. When it is in a stable position, get out of the kayak and pull it completely onto the shore where you can empty any water from inside.
