If you want to enjoy the beauty and adventure snorkeling has to offer, then you owe it to yourself to invest in your own gear. Unlike other underwater sports, snorkeling requires minimal equipment, but it's crucial that what you do have fits properly. If you select the right fins, you'll find that with care they can provide years of comfort.

Difficulty: Easy
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Set a budget and stick to it. There is a wide variety of fin styles in every price range and you don't need to spend a fortune to get good quality product. Consider how much use they'll get. If you're an avid snorkler, it may be worth investing in a more high tech design.

  2. Step 2

Start with a full foot style paddle fin, which is more common for snorkeling. Fins with heel straps or split fins are designed more for scuba activity or free diving.

  3. Step 3

Choose a size closest to your actual shoe size. Fins come in size ranges, like size 3 to 5 or 6 to 8. If you pick a size that matches your shoe size and it doesn't fit well, try a different brand and you'll be amazed at the difference in fit.

  4. Step 4

Try on several pairs to find the ones that fit best. They should fit snug on your foot but not so tightly that they cut off your circulation. Check the heels to make sure they're not so loose that your fins will slip off.

Tips & Warnings
  • If you decide to purchase find with an adjustable heel strap, make sure you also get wet suit boots to wear with this style fin.
