Canada is home to the unique Trans Canada Trail, which runs 11,185 miles across every Canadian Province and Territory. The trail varies from one area to the next. Some portions of the trail follow rail lines, while others follow secondary roads. Most Canadians live within close proximity to some part of the trail. Follow these steps to embark on a Trans Canada Trail adventure.

Instructions

Difficulty: Challenging

Step1
Start at the eastern end in Newfoundland or the western end in British Columbia or Yukon Territory. Fly into Vancouver, British Columbia or St. John's International Airport in Newfoundland.
Step2
Identify sites you'd like to see along the trail. For example, venture off the trail in Montreal to visit Parc Mont Royal. While in Ottawa, visit Canada's parliamentary buildings.
Step3
Determine how far you'll travel each day and select campsites, bed and breakfast locations or hotels where you'll sleep along the way. Use the distance calculator on the Trans Canada Trail website to assist you.
Step4
Prepare for portions of the trail that go over water. Take a ferry across the St. Lawrence River or use a bridge to cross bodies of water. There are also options for canoeing along the St. Lawrence if you're interested.
Step5
Decide how you'll travel during the winter months. Cross-country skiing or snowshoeing are viable options. Consider renting a snowmobile for a portion of your winter trek.
Step6
Plan to carry as much as 10 days of food with you when traveling through rural locations. Identify grocery or camping stores in advance.

Tips & Warnings

  • Remember that there are six modes of transportation allowed along the Trans Canada Trail including hiking, cycling, horseback riding, cross-country skiing, snowmobiling and canoeing.
  • Purchase walking poles before your journey. These poles help redistribute the weight from your back to your arms. They also make it easier to walk up hills.
