A cold air intake system can increase your vehicle's horsepower and improve gas mileage by cooling the air entering the car. Once you purchase a cold air intake system from an auto parts store, you should be able to install it in less than 2 hours.

Difficulty: Moderately Challenging
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Remove the car's original air intake tube. It's a rubber hose attached by clamps to the engine's throttle body and the air box on the fender.

  2. Step 2

Remove the screws attaching the original air box to the fender well. The box can be taken out easily after this.

  3. Step 3

Remove the air intake's lower half. This may include a muffler to reduce the intake noise. You may need to raise the car to access this.

  4. Step 4

Feed the cold intake system's lower tube up through the engine compartment and attach its air filter to the bottom. The filter will be in the fender where it can access the colder air.

  5. Step 5

Attach the system's second tube to the throttle body where the original tube was attached. An included urethane connector and two clamps should connect it.

  6. Step 6

Connect both tubes with the second urethane connector and clamps. You should then secure the lower tube in the engine compartment with a flange and large nut.

Tips & Warnings
  • You should consult a mechanic or auto specialist to find out which cold air intake is best for your car. Then check the specific instructions provided with the system as they may vary.
  • A cold air intake system will likely produce more noise than the standard manufacturer system.
  • In rainy weather, an intake at the fender can draw water into the engine, damaging the pistons and valves. If your climate includes very damp seasons, you might reconsider installing a cold air intake or changing it during those wet times.
