How to Remove an Old Koi Pond

There are many reasons to want to remove an old koi pond. Maybe you found your dream home, but you don't have energy to keep up with a koi pond, or perhaps you want to build a bigger pond in a different location. Whatever your reason, you have to understand the steps involved to remove the old koi pond and keep the integrity of your yard intact.

Instructions

    • 1

Relocate any living creatures in the pond. If you have koi presently living in the pond, you need to find a new home for them before you progress further. Try to find a local koi club or put an ad in the paper. You may also find people willing to take away any plants, snails or frogs that call your pond home.

    • 2

Empty out the water. Get a length of hose and try to siphon out the water in the pond by creating suction. You can rent or buy a heavy-duty sump pump, or you can try to do it yourself using the filtration system already installed in your pond.

    • 3

Inspect the pond's construction. Once the water is gone, you can have a good look at what you're dealing with. If the pond is lined with PVC pond liner, you just need to remove the liner. If the bottom is made out of concrete, you need to use a sledgehammer to break the concrete apart and then haul it away.

    • 4

Cover up. Once you have the pond remnants removed, simply fill up the hole with dirt. You'll probably also want to include grass seed or turf so that the spot can blend in with the rest of your landscaping.
