The data is encoded to give specific information about the item being scanned such as its cost, product code, the department it came from and even where it is going to.

Instructions

Difficulty: Moderate

Step1
Understand that barcode readers or barcode scanners come with an array of features. The technology can range from entry level to advance. Scanners generally fall into three categories: rhe portable or handheld, permanent or mounted and the reader.
Step2
Buy a portable scanner. The portable, or hand held scanner, is the least expensive. The price range for this scanner starts below one-hundred and can be as high as two-thousand dollars. The scanner is shaped similar to a handgun. It can be held in either hand. The grip or trigger is depressed to release the laser which records the barcode information. The recording process stops after the trigger is released. The handheld version is also called the entry level or wireless scanner. It is used frequently in retail and inventory.
Step3
Plan for the future. The upgrade from the handheld scanner is the permanent or mounted barcode scanner. The scanners are mounted to a counter, wall or door. The permanent of fixed barcode scanner can scan barcodes at a rapid speed. The price ranges from $300 to $3,000. To activate this type of scanner the item needs to placed directly in the laser beam path. The scanner automatically shuts off after the item has been removed. The permanent or mounted scanner is also referred to as the intermediate level. These scanners are used in retail, manufacturing and health care. This scanner has the capacity to be upgraded to meet technology.
Step4
Take the plunge. The most advanced type of scanner is the reader. Readers can interpret data magnetically encoded on barcodes, identification badges and stored on credit cards. The reader is referred to as the advanced form of scanners. Price ranges are from $100 to $8000.
Step5
Use current technology. Data from scanners can be downloaded or uploaded to computers, projectors, printers, calculator and MP3 players.
