An abstract mosaic knitting pattern is a nice way to add color to your knitting. This simple technique uses slip stitches to add interest to your knitting. You can easily learn to use the abstract mosaic pattern in sweaters, scarves, afghans or any project that has spaces where the pattern can show.

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Knitting needles
  • Two colors of yarn
  • Comfortable chair with a good light
  1. Step 1

Cast on a multiple of eight stitches plus three more to have enough for your abstract mosaic pattern. Use color A for casting on. Purl the first row using color A.

  2. Step 2

Use color B to knit the next row. Start with a knit 1, follow that by knitting 2, slip stitching 3 and knitting 3. Repeat from the knit 2 until you are 2 stitches from the end of the row. Finally, knit the last two stitches. Use color B to purl the stitches that were knitted in the previous row and to slip the slip stitches.

  3. Step 3

Change to color A and knit the first stitch in this row. Then knit 1, slip stitch 1, knit 5 and slip stitch 1. Repeat this until the last two stitches and knit those two. Continue with color A to purl and slip stitch the next row--follow the direction in the second half of Step 2.

  4. Step 4

Switch to color B and knit the first stitch. Then slip stitch 1, knit 3, slip 1 and knit 3. Repeat from the first slip stitch and end the row with 1 slip stitch and 1 knitted stitch. Purl and slip stitch with color B for your next row.

  5. Step 5

Knit the next row with color A. Knit 1, knit 3, slip stitch 1, knit 1, slip 1 and knit 2. Repeat from the knit 3 and end the row with 2 knitted stitches. Purl and slip stitch with color A for your next row.

  6. Step 6

Work the next row with color B. Start with a knit 1, then slip stitch 1, knit 5 and slip 2. Repeat from the first slip stitch and end the row with 1 slip stitch and 1 knit. Purl and slip stitch with color B for your next row.

  7. Step 7

Craft the next row with color A. Knit 1, knit 1, slip stitch 1, knit 1, slip 1 and knit 4. Repeat from the second knit stitch and knit the last 2 stitches. Purl and slip stitch with color A for your next row.

  8. Step 8

Start the next row in color B with a knit 1. Then knit 2, slip stitch 1, knit 3, slip stitch 1 and knit 1. Repeat from the knit 2 and end with a knit 2. Purl and slip stitch with color B for your next row.

  9. Step 9

Use color A to knit 1. Then knit 4, slip stitch 1, knit 1 and slip stitch 1. Repeat from the knit 4 and finish the row with two knitted stitches. Purl and slip stitch with color A for your next row.

  10. Step 10

Repeat from Step 3, alternating with purled and slip stitch rows, until your swatch is as long as your pattern requires. Then cast off and admire your abstract mosaic pattern.
