Things You'll Need:
- iPod
- iPod linux software
- Microphone or earbuds
-
Step 1
Download and install iPod Linux on the iPod. (See the resources section for more information.) Connect the iPod to the home computer. Download iPod Linux to the iPod hard drive. Double click on the downloaded file to begin the installation. Follow the on-screen instructions to complete the install.
-
Step 2
Unplug the iPod from the computer and boot to the Linux iPod operating system.
-
Step 3
Press the "menu" option on iPod and select the "Extras" option from the menu. Finally choose the "recordings" options from the extras menu.
-
Step 4
Change the recording setting as necessary. Eight kilohertz is default setting for recording quality. This is a very low-grade recording quality, therefore it is recommended that this setting needs changing. Ninety-six kilohertz is the maximum quality but beware that the higher the sound quality the larger the file.
-
Step 5
Determine the method with which to record. The two recording options are the "Mic record" or the "Line in record." Mic record uses a microphone or ear buds and the line in record uses the docking station plugs to record.
-
Step 6
Record the audio onto the iPod. When using the mic record option plug in the microphone or ear buds and select "Mic record" from the record menu. Be sure to test the recording apparatus first by talking or singing into the microphone or ear bud headphones. Next if the "Line in" option is used the plug the iPod into the docking station. Then plug the headphones or microphone into lineout jack on the docking station. Again, test the recording capabilities before using.
-
Step 7
Play the file to make sure it recorded correctly. First, select "Recordings" from the extra menu. Then choose "Playback" from the recording menu and select the recorded file.
