Step 1
Set a budget for both food and other concessions, like souvenir programs. It's easy to get to a game and decide that you want a hot dog, peanuts, ice cream and a few sodas to wash it all down even if you weren't planning on eating during the game at all. Having a budget in place can help you control your spending.
-
Step 2
Share snacks and costs with a friend or family member so you can both save money. Decide on something that you both want to snack on and a price you both are comfortable with. Split the cost two ways.
-
Step 3
Pace yourself. It's not really necessary to drink a soda for every period of the game and it's not that healthy for you or your wallet either. If you find yourself getting caught up in the fast pace of the game, slow down. Make a drink or snack that you bought during the first intermission last until the second intermission to reduce the temptation to go buy more food.

Step 4
Buy value packages. Most NHL teams have special promotions during home games that are geared towards making hockey an affordable family activity. These promotions usually include special ticket packages that offer seats, food and drinks for one price that's typically lower than purchasing all of these items individually. Attend home games during these promotions and take advantage of discounted food offers to save money while you enjoy a live hockey game.

Step 5
Choose smaller portions. Most concession stands offer drinks and snacks in small, medium and large portions or offer them with or without added extra items like cheese, onions or condiments. Omitting extra items and opting for smaller portions can help you save money at the concession stand.
