A bird flight is made to keep a large amount of birds with enough room for them to fly. The easiest type of bird flight to build is made from several screen door frames that are connected together. Using screen door frames saves time and money as the construction is already done for you.

Instructions

Difficulty: Moderately Easy

Things You’ll Need:

  • Screen doors
  • Lucite or wire mesh
  • Staple gun
  • Staple remover
  • Power drill
  • 3/4-inch screws
  • Polyurethane

Step1
Place the screen door face down on the ground. Remove any screws that may be holding down the molding. Tear the screen out of the screen door and discard.
Step2
Apply paint or stain to the screen door frame if you desire. Apply several coats and allow it to dry thoroughly. Finish with at least two coats of water-based polyurethane to preserve the wooden screen door.
Step3
Cut the Lucite or wire to the size of the wooden frame. Secure the Lucite to the frame with screws and predrilled holes. Secure the wire with a staple gun.
Step4
Repeat to make as many panels as you need for the bird flight. The amount of panels will depend upon the size of the bird flight.
Step5
Lay two of the panels side by side, flush against each other. Use as many panels as necessary to make the length and width of the bird flight. Attach them with the brackets.
Step6
Connect both sides of the aviary to the back using the corner brackets. Use four brackets that are spaced equally apart. Screw 2-by-2s to the top of the bird flight to maintain the width of the aviary.
Step7
Hang doors using hinges on the front of the bird flight. Close it with a hook and eye closure. Cover the top of the bird flight with either hardware cloth or a waterproof material if the flight is outdoors.

Tips & Warnings

  • Take into consideration the amount of traffic, air circulation and access to water and electricity when determining where to put your bird flight.
  • Only use untreated wood to build the bird flight. Treated wood can poison the birds.
