How to Make a Mosaic Birdbath

A birdbath is a pretty common decoration for a garden. You can make the birdbath in your garden different from everyone else's by creating a mosaic design in it. The process is simple and quick. Best of all it's a great way to put old pottery pieces you may have laying around to good use.

Things You'll Need:

• Old pottery or ceramic pieces or new mosaic pieces from a craft store
• Safety glasses
• Rubber gloves
• Tile cutters
• Old rag or towel
• Hammer
• Cement birdbath
• Tile glue
• Grout
• Putty knife
• Sponge
• Tile sealant

1. Gather your materials. Put on your safety glasses and rubber gloves.

2. Wrap the ceramic pieces in an old towel or rag. Gently tap the glass with the hammer until you have pieces the size you want. You can skip this step if you are using purchased mosaic pieces.

3. Lay out the ceramic pieces in a pattern you like. You may have to turn the pieces in a variety of ways to get them to follow the curves of the birdbath.

4. Glue the mosaic pieces in place. You can either put the glue directly on the birdbath or you can put it on the back of the ceramic pieces. Let the pieces dry in place according to the time specified on the glue.

5. Follow the directions on the package of grout to mix it. Spread the grout all over the tiles with the putty knife. You may need to work the grout into the smaller cracks with your fingers. Make sure all the cracks are full of grout. Let the grout dry at least 48 hours.

6. Use a slightly damp sponge to wipe away any excess grout to allow the colors of the ceramics show through. Let the mosaic pattern air-dry. Apply sealant according to package instructions. Let it dry another 48 hours before filling the birdbath with water.
