Massage therapy can improve blood circulation, relax your muscles and increase the levels of the feel-good endorphins. It's a great holistic healing method that many people train for years to perfect. The good news is that you can enjoy the healing benefits of massage therapy yourself by learning to self massage the neck.

Instructions

Difficulty: Moderate

Step1
Make sure you are in a quiet location where you'll be undisturbed for a few minutes. Take a moment to focus on exactly where the aches and pains are in your neck.
Step2
Interlace your fingers behind your head leaving your thumbs free and pointing towards your neck.
Step3
Place one thumb along the each side of the spinal column at the base of your neck and press the pads of the thumbs into the long muscles along the side of your neck.
Step4
Press firmly in deep slow circles. Do about eight circles in each spot and then move the thumb pads up to a new position. Continue until you reach the top of your neck.
Step5
Place the pads of your thumbs above your ears with your palms pressed lightly to the side of your head.
Step6
Apply slow and even pressure along your natural hairline until your thumbs meet at the back of your head.
Step7
Make little circles with your thumb pads as you move them along your hairline and back to their original position. Repeat as many times as desired.

Tips & Warnings

  • Do not put harsh pressure on any area of the neck that is red, sunburned or broken.
  • If anything is painful, don't do it.
  • Do not try to heal yourself with self massage if you've been seriously ill or injured. Consult a professional.
