Sport climbing is essentially rock wall climbing that takes place outside. Sport climbing consists of climbing outdoor rock walls that have been amended to hold permanent rock climbing equipment, such as bolts, making rocks that were not climber-friendly into rocks that can be enjoyed by many.

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Check your equipment. Make sure you have ropes, harnesses, bolt carriers and quick sets and that they're in good condition.

  2. Step 2

Review the rock wall you want to sport climb. Determine where the bolts are located and map out a basic path for your climb.

  3. Step 3

Begin your ascent by setting your first hand holds. Follow with your foot holds.

  4. Step 4

Practice your techniques for both rock climbing and rope tying while climbing. Move up the face of the rock with deliberate moves, practicing a variety of rock climbing moves such as mantling, lay backs and under clings.

  5. Step 5

Move your safety ropes and bolt carriers according to your position on the rock. Make sure you're securing in properly and using the correct equipment. If a bolt feels loose or you don't trust it's stability, do not clip into it. Skip it and move on to the next one.

  6. Step 6

Complete your climb by reaching the top of the rock, or repel down from the top if you so desire.

Tips & Warnings
  • Always wear protective gear when performing any type of rock climbing. Even the most seasoned climbers make mistakes and experience slips and falls. Your protective gear is designed to prevent serious injury during such an accident.
