How to Twirl a Flag

Though twirling a flag may seem simple enough, for those in color guard, flag twirling is anything but simple. The drop spin is a standard in flag twirling, so if you are a flag-twirling novice, here are some basic steps to master.

    Instructions

      • 1

Hold the flag in the right shoulder position (also known as RS). Holding the bottom with your left hand in front of you level with your belly button or belt buckle and holding the flag level with your forehead with your right hand.

      • 2

Let your left hand fall at your side. Move the flag counterclockwise until the flag is straight but in the upside down position. As you bring the flag down, bring your right hand down. By the time your flag is upside down, your right hand should be at belly button level.

      • 3

Put your left hand out in front of you with your palm facing down and turn your hand 90 degrees clockwise until your thumb is pointing downward. This may feel strange, but you'll know you're doing it right if it does.

      • 4

Grab the pole with your left hand just below your right hand.

      • 5

Let go with your right hand and let it fall at your side. Keep the flag moving counterclockwise until it is right side up. Grab the flag with your right hand just below your left.

      • 6

Repeat these steps for a continuous twirl. You do not have to return to the initial position to repeat. Simply let your left hand fall at your side and continue from Step 2.
