Building a cage for your snake can be a fun and satisfying project. There are a variety of snakes, so do some research on your snake and use your local pet store as a resource before you begin.

Difficulty: Moderately Challenging
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Draw out your plan. You want enough space for your snake, heat mats and lighting.

  2. Step 2

Choose your materials. The best materials are melamine, MDF and waterproof plywood. These retain moisture well and keep in heat. You can use a glass aquarium if your snake is less than 6 feet long.

  3. Step 3

Decide on the type of opening for your cage. You want something that gives you easy access. If you have limited room, a sliding door will work well. You can also use a drop down door.

  4. Step 4

Drill holes in the back of the snake cage to thread an electrical cord through to attach to the heating mat. Stick the mat down with tape or put tile or melamine over it. Add silicone around the edge to prevent water damage.

  5. Step 5

Assemble the lighting fixture. Use a hood or lip at the top of the cage to help hide the lighting tubes.

  6. Step 6

Consider the security of your snake when making your cage. They are great escape artists. They will push off lightweight lids and open sliding doors. You will need a lock for those sliding doors and a heavier lid.
