Home sellers should organize their closets as part of a comprehensive home-staging plan. Having closets arranged neatly and efficiently showcases the storage space in your home, and ample, attractive storage space can be an important selling feature as you strive to get top dollar for your property.

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Closet organizer system
  • Storage space
  1. Step 1

Begin by emptying the closet of everything inside it. Organize like items together as you rearrange what you've removed. Put all items that don't fit with the purpose of the closet (such as "the linen closet," "the clothing closet" or "the storage closet") where they belong.

  2. Step 2

Evaluate whether the space could benefit from a closet organizer, which you can find at a department or home improvement store. You can use one to create mini-shelves and sectioned regions in which you can store items of similar sizes. They help create an impression of depth and room in the closet.

  3. Step 3

Make sure any light bulbs in the closet are working correctly, and dust and polish the light fixtures. Add fixtures to bare bulbs, then wash down all the existing shelving space, the walls and the floor.

  4. Step 4

Complete any installations you want to add to the closet space and get to refilling it, grouping similar items together. Avoid over packing the closet. In fact, it can be a useful strategy to organize items like clothing out over several different closet spaces within a room, since it creates an impression of choice to prospective home buyers.

  5. Step 5

Collect all your nonessential items, and pack them up in boxes, which you'll label and find room for in a hidden-storage area. You should dedicate attic space and/or basement shelves to storing boxed items, or you can move them out to the garage.

  6. Step 6

Leave several closets completely empty before selling your home. Letting prospective buyers see as much empty space as possible is a tried-and-true psychological strategy for generating interest in your home. It allows the buyer to think about how he would use the space himself, rather than how it was used before him.

  7. Step 7

Consider renting space at a storage warehouse before selling your home as a way of getting all the nonessential items you've collected over the years out of the way. The cost of renting a personal-storage space is usually very affordable, and package discounts are often available if you're going to use the space for a period of several months during the selling and moving process.

Tips & Warnings
  • You can also give items you don't need to charity, rather than worrying about finding a place to store them.
