Curling up in a hammock is a luxury nearly everyone enjoys. It's simple to make an economical pillow for your hammock by using several old t-shirts and some fiberfill. When your favorite shirts are too worn for your wardrobe, you can use them to create a comfy cradle for your head.

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Two to four old t-shirts
  • Thread
  • Fiberfill pillow stuffing
  • Scissors
  • Straight pins
  • Sewing machine
  • Hand sewing needle
  1. Step 1

Cut out a 12-inch by 12-inch section from each t-shirt. You should have four total shirt sections when you're finished.

  2. Step 2

Select your two favorite pieces to make the pillow's front. Pin the pieces securely together to prepare them for sewing. Sew the two sections together using a 1/2-inch seam.

  3. Step 3

Repeat the process with the back fabric pieces, matching them together at the center and sewing a 1/2-inch seam to attach them.

  4. Step 4

Turn the front and back sections inside out, placing them together and pinning along the edges. Sew a 1/2-inch seam along the outside edges, leaving a 2-inch hole to accommodate the stuffing. You'll have a 12-inch by 24-inch pillow shape when you're finished.

  5. Step 5

Turn the pillow right-side out, pulling the fabric through the small, leftover hole. Stuff the pillow with fiberfill, secure the hole and sew the opening shut by hand.

  6. Step 6

Pull apart the pillow layers to allow air in, fluffing the fiberfill until it is evenly distributed. Lie down in your hammock to try out your new pillow while you take a snooze.

Tips & Warnings
  • Purchase resilient, premium filling to stuff your pillow. Cheap stuffing becomes lumpy with use and does not retain its loft when laundered. Find a large selection of premium fiberfill products at BattMart.com (see Resources below).
  • If you have a large hammock, make your pillow wider by using three 12-inch t-shirt sections to make each side.
  • Follow the laundering directions found on the fiberfill wrapper when it is time to wash and dry your new pillow.
  • If you want to tie your pillow to the hammock spreader bar, install small grommets on the top corners of the pillow. Thread a piece of rope or cord through the grommets and secure the pillow to the spreader bar.
  • Do not leave your pillow outside in inclement weather. The fabric and fiberfill could mold or mildew if they remain wet for a long period of time.
