Step 1
Decide whether you want to learn a specific type of dance, such as the waltz, or get an overview of several popular ballroom dances. Videos vary in the number of dances they feature as well as in the styles shown.
-
Step 2
Look for ballroom dancing videos at your local library or movie rental store. Check out a few and watch them at home before you spend money on a video that may not be helpful to you.
-
Step 3
Check the Ballroom Dancers website for a selection of videos (see Resources below). This site provides a video selection that covers most skill levels.
-
Step 4
Evaluate your schedule for how long you will be able to watch a video at any given time. For example, if you know that you will only be able to watch a video in 1/2-hour increments, select a video that presents units or topics within that time frame.
-
Step 5
Select a video that fits your skill and experience levels. Ballroom levels usually consist of beginner, intermediate and advanced.
-
Step 6
Select a beginner-level video if you require instruction in the fundamental movements as well as body positioning.
-
Step 7
Choose intermediate-level videos if you have the basic movements covered, and you want to tackle more complicated dances. At this level, you probably still need a good deal of instruction and may benefit from a refresher of the basics.
-
Step 8
Go for advanced videos if you are ready to learn more difficult and stylistic moves.
-
Step 9
Read the credentials of the instructor on the video. There should be some experience in ballroom instruction listed. Mention of an instructor's competitive ballroom dancing awards is a plus.
