Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Things You’ll Need:
- Computer
- USB cable or serial cable
- Mapping software
Step1
Install the mapping software that comes with your handheld GPS unit on your PC before attempting to attach the unit to the computer. There are several different types of software available, but most manufacturers have their own proprietary software. This software is needed for your computer to interface with your device.
Step2
Set the interface settings on your device to work with your desired mode of connection. For example, you may have to switch the interface settings to USB mass storage mode. Check your user manual for specific directions on how to access and change interface settings.
Step3
Locate the connection ports on your handheld GPS device. Typically, these ports are covered by a rubber flap to protect them from the elements. Lift the flaps up to access the ports.
Step4
Connect the GPS unit to your PC using either the USB port or the serial port. Most devices come with a suitable USB cord. Your computer will detect the device when it is properly connected.
Step5
Locate your handheld device on your computer. On a PC, this should be located under "My Computer" in the "Removable Disk" drive.
Step6
Find the track log file containing the data you wish to copy.
Step7
Copy and paste that file onto your desktop.
Step8
Import the file into your mapping software for use and storage.
Step9
Save your log under a name that will help you identify it later. Track logs can start to look the same if they are not properly labeled. Consider naming files using the date of the trip, the location of the trip or a combination of both.
