How to Take a Pilates Barre Workout
Pilates is the exercise method created by Joseph Pilates. It tones and strengthens the muscles by working slow controlled movements from the core of the body. The barre is the smooth railing traditionally held by the dancer for balance in ballet training. Recently, exercise instructors brought the two together to make for powerful routines.

1
Look for a studio offering classes specifically titled "Pilates Barre." Some general Pilates classes offer only a small amount of barre work. You can find Pilates classes at private health and fitness clubs or a Pilates studio. You can also visit the official website of the Pilates Method Alliance to find teachers and classes (see Resources below).
-
2
Search for a certified Pilates instructor and ask the teacher what her training included. For example, to be certified by the Pilates Method Alliance, an instructor must complete at least 400 hours of training that includes both observation and hands-on teaching experience. A certified Pilates Method Alliance teacher will also be well-versed on all Pilates equipment, include the barre.

3
Prepare your body before signing up for class. You can practice simple Pilates exercises for conditioning. Check out the Easy Vigour website for how to do Pilates exercises (see Resources below).
-
4
Follow class guidelines for what to wear. Generally, you will want to take class in comfortable apparel that is breathable and allows maximum range of motion.
-
5
Wear socks for your Pilates Barre workout, unless your instructor specifies a particular type of footwear.
-
6
Warm up prior to class. For example, you can take a short walk (five to 10 minutes), do some deep knee bends and stretch the muscles of your arms and legs.
-
7
Concentrate on each individual movement in class. Remember to do them slowly and controlled from the core of your body.
-
8
Press through with your feet as you perform movements such as plies and tendus. Perform them in the precise, controlled method of Pilates and remember to take deep, cleansing breaths.
-
9
Ask your Pilates Barre instructor to assess your posture frequently. Have the instructor show you adjustments to make in your technique.
-
10
Purchase a Pilates Barre workout tape to use at home when not in class. Pick one with mini workouts if you have limited time. You will need to have a portable barre and Pilates mat. Jillian Hessel's "Pilates Barre Workout" is a good choice and can be found at Jillian Hessel Pilates (see Resources below).
