Here's to salt on your skin and a mini umbrella in your drink. You are headed for a much-deserved vacation at the coast or a day trip to the beach. To make the most of sunny weather, sparkling water and miles of sand, you must select the best beach gear available.

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Get a durable, lined beach tote to carry your smaller supplies. These fun, colorful bags can found in department stores, sports stores and beach shops. Look for versions designed with "wet" compartments to keep your damp articles separate from those you need to keep dry.

  2. Step 2

Select sunscreen (a high SPF factor is recommended), lip balm and a floppy hat for keeping the burn away.

  3. Step 3

Invest in a beach umbrella and chair or beach cabana (tent) for long stays on the sand. Look for sturdiness and easy setup, with sturdy anchors to keep the coastal winds from spoiling your retreat.

  4. Step 4

Select a blanket for lying on the beach. Consider one made of strong nylon that dries quickly and allows you to shake off the sand with minimal effort. Also, consider one that has pockets that can be filled with sand for anchoring and that folds into a tote for easy carrying.

  5. Step 5

Select light-colored, breathable clothing to wear over your swimsuit and choose sandals or water shoes for your feet. For example, take a look at Crocs at Crocs.com to keep your feet comfortable (see Resources below).

  6. Step 6

Select a cooler to roll down to the beach with you. There are dozens of designs to choose from with special features like heavy-duty, hard liners covered by pocketed fabric. A good example is the Cool Fusion 40 Roller at Igloocoolers.com (see Resources below).

  7. Step 7

Plan for recreation by selecting beach toys. Floats, boogie boards, Frisbees, kites, volleyballs and beach balls abound. Choose toys made of heavy-duty materials that will endure the rigors of frequent beach recreation.

  8. Step 8

Select a pair of binoculars, and capture memories with a waterproof, disposable camera from a well-known manufacturer like Fuji. Visit Fujifilmusa.com to view some options (see Resources below).

Tips & Warnings
  • When you select your gear, keep in mind that you will be transporting it back and forth, so you want to consider lightweight items and maybe a wheeled cart.
  • Label all your beach gear as others on the beach may have similar items.
