When your bathroom sink gets clogged, there is no need to call a plumber as a first response. In many cases, you can actually use a plunger to unclog a sink drain successfully. The action is very similar to plunging a toilet, but there is a certain precaution that must be done first before the plunging can begin. Before you even begin, make sure the plunger forms a tight seal over the drain. If it doesn't, a smaller plunger will have to be used. Does this Spark an idea?

      Fill sink about half way up

      Place a cloth over vent hole. This is usually located in the front part of the bowl opposite the faucet. Ball up the cloth, push it in the vent hole and make a tight seal.

      Remove the stopper if possible for the best results. Plunge the sink while holding the cloth against the vent hole. Push down on the plunger slowly then pull up quickly. The reverse suction will pull the clog backwards and allow it to drain down the pipe. Repeat until the clog is gone.

Tips & Warnings

  • After the clog is gone you can maintain the drain by boiling water and mixing it with baking soda and pouring it down the drain once a month
