Reduce stress with a clutter-free living space.

The truth is we all have too much stuff. It’s lying around on tables, piling up on the floor and otherwise making our homes into dens of clutter rather than peaceful retreats. It’s so hard to get rid of things! But some savvy strategies can help to whip those rooms into shape.

Difficulty: Moderately Challenging
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Temporary and permanent places for possessions
  • Trash bags and boxes
  • Paper bags for papers to be recycled
  • Shelving and storage boxes
  1. Step 1

Analyze what’s in each room as you focus on it. Some things belong there but they are not in their correct place. Put them away. Other things don’t belong in that room. Take them to a central staging area.

  2. Step 2

Sort all the items that are not in their proper place into categories like magazines and newspapers, mail that needs a response, clothes, solicitations you haven’t decided what to do with and toys.

  3. Step 3

Put all the excess paper into bags for recycling. Take the mail to the place where you will process it. Put clothes in drawers or cupboards or in the laundry. Gather the solicitations into a pile and take them to your desk. Check that toys have all their parts; replace them where they belong.

  4. Step 4

Get in the habit of doing a quick review of your rooms every day or two. The clutter is easier to manage when it doesn’t accumulate for weeks.

  5. Step 5

Make sure that your possessions have a place to go. Even when they are not in the place, at least it’s available.

  6. Step 6

Get rid of as much as you can and be cautious about buying new things. Remember that anything you bring into your space has to go somewhere!

Tips & Warnings
  • If the clutter is really overwhelming, consider hiring a professional organizer to help you get new systems for managing.
  • Keep a wastebasket or a bin near the door where the mail is placed every day. As soon as you look at it, put everything you don’t need into the basket for recycling.
  • It’s OK to leave things in their temporary places as long as you have a plan to put them in the permanent ones.
  • The subject of cleaning up often leads to disagreements between housemates and families since people have different views of what constitutes clutter and how to deal with it. Be sensitive to the feelings of the people you live with. Negotiate, don’t nag!
