How to Prevent Gingivitis

Gingivitis leads to recessed, unhealthy gums and, if untreated, can cause even more serious ailments. Luckily, the disease is easily reversible and you can prevent it simply by exercising a little basic oral hygiene.

  1. Step 1

    Brush your teeth. Your mother was right; brushing your teeth twice each day after meals will prevent gingivitis and keep your mouth feeling healthy. Focus your brushing on the top of your teeth near the gum line, which is where bacterial plaque can build up and cause gingivitis.

  2. Step 2

    Floss between your teeth after you are finished brushing. Flossing is important because it gets to those areas between the teeth where brushing normally can't reach. Cleaning every part of the gum line is important if you want to prevent gingivitis.

  3. Step 3

    Use a water pick. Like dental floss, water picks scour away plaque and food particles in places where toothbrushes are unable to clean. Dentists recommend using warm saltwater, which will further prevent the spread of bacteria that causes gingivitis.

  4. Step 4

    Gargle with strong mouthwash. Good medicinal mouthwash such as Listerine clears out bacteria and eliminates bad breath which, incidentally, is one of the symptoms of gingivitis. Rinse your mouth with mouthwash for at least 30 seconds each time to ensure that it does its job.

  5. Step 5

    Mix baking soda with a little water and perhaps a capful of hydrogen peroxide. It should create a paste-like substance that you can then brush on your teeth with a toothbrush. Baking soda will prevent the spread of plaque and bacteria, while polishing your teeth through its gentle abrasives.

  6. Step 6

    See your dentist twice each year. You can take any number of steps at home to prevent gingivitis, but regular cleanings from your dentist are absolutely necessary to keep plaque and tartar from building up.

  7. Step 7

    Knead your gums. Place your thumb behind your teeth and gently rub your gums with your forefinger. It invigorates the blood flow and helps improve your mouth's immune system.

  8. Step 8

    Refrain from smoking. Not only does it weaken your immune system, but it actively facilitates the growth of bacteria in your mouth (the cause of gingivitis). It also interferes with any other measure you take to prevent gingivitis.

Tips & Warnings
  • Though not specific remedies to gingivitis, certain vitamins and minerals can help prevent the disease if taken regularly. Calcium promotes strong bones, which include teeth, and vitamin C is effective in helping your gums stay healthy.
