While fasting has long been practiced to cleanse the mind and body of unwanted toxins, it is now also used to achieve weight loss. A healthier alternative to a traditional fast, which allowed for only water to be consumed, is a diet that consists solely of juice. The juice is thought to be a good source of vitamins and antioxidants. The addition of juice can help support some of your body's needs while you abstain from food.

Difficulty: Moderately Challenging
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Juicer
  • Organic fruits and vegetables
  • Water
  1. Step 1

Begin a juice fast during the summer or spring, when fruit and vegetables are readily available.

  2. Step 2

Eliminate sugar, alcohol, dairy, nicotine, caffeine, wheat, animal meat, fish and eggs from your diet approximately 7 days before you begin the fast.

  3. Step 3

Practice a fasting preparation diet consisting of organic fruits, vegetables and beans for the 7 days leading up to the juice fast.

  4. Step 4

Consume between 32 and 64 oz. of juice each day while fasting. Websites like Health Recipes can help you come up with unique ways to vary your juice diet (see Resources below).

  5. Step 5

Drink plenty of water during the fast. It is important to consume at least six glasses of water at room temperature.

  6. Step 6

Break the juice fast gradually by adding solid foods back into your diet. It is important to start with just a few pieces of fruit on the first day and slowly work your way back to a balanced diet. Do not continue to add carbohydrates if you notice that the weight loss is decreasing or if you realize that it has stopped completely.

Tips & Warnings
  • Load up on green vegetables and sprouts when choosing juice ingredients. They contain chlorophyll, which juice proponents believe is especially beneficial during a juice fast.
  • Check with your doctor before you begin a fast for the purpose of weight loss. He can make sure you do not have a medical condition that would prevent positive results from a fast.
  • Do not fast if you are pregnant or nursing. Fasting can also be dangerous for children.
  • Fasting can alter the way prescription drugs react in the body.
  • Fasting will cleanse your body of toxins, which are mostly found in fat. Detoxification will force the toxins into the blood stream for the body to eliminate. This elimination can occur through the lungs and eventually by breathing out the toxins. This can also occur through the skin. This can cause bad breath and body odor. This is a temporary side effect of the fasting process.
  • Other side effects can include headaches, tiredness, diarrhea, dizziness, low blood pressure, kidney problems, heart arrhythmias, constipation, hypoglycemia and acne.
