How to Select a Wireless Keyboard

The right wireless keyboard can enhance your computing experience, often saving you time and making it more convenient and comfortable for you to do your work. Not all wireless keyboards are designed the same, however, and not all of them are equally compatible with your computer equipment, so select with care.

Instructions

Difficulty: Easy

Things You’ll Need:

  • Specifications of your computer or laptop

Step1
Select a wireless keyboard with Bluetooth technology if you have Bluetooth capability built in to your computer or an external Bluetooth adapter. Bluetooth technology allows the keyboard to synchronize directly with your computer rather than going through a separate wireless receiver.
Step2
Choose a traditional wireless keyboard to save money, or if you don't mind having to deal with the added receiver component. A regular wireless keyboard can cost as little as $30 for a basic model, while Bluetooth-enabled keyboards start at around $80 and can reach up to several hundred dollars.
Step3
Look for a wireless keyboard that comes bundled with a wireless mouse—it's cheaper than buying them separately. Popular options include the Dell Bluetooth Wireless Keyboard and Mouse Bundle, the Logitech S530 USB Cordless Desktop Keyboard/Laser Mouse Bundle for Macs and Microsoft's Wireless Entertainment Desktop 8000 Keyboard/Mouse combo. All can be purchased at the Dell website (see Resources below).
Step4
Select a wireless keyboard with an ergonomic design to curb wrist and arm fatigue. Options include the Logitech Wave Keyboard, the Microsoft Wireless Laser Desktop 4000, 7000 and 8000 models, and for Mac users, the Apple wireless keyboard with Bluetooth. The Logitech and Microsoft keyboards are available from TigerDirect.com, while the Apple version can be purchased at the Apple Store website (see Resources below).
Step5
Compare prices and brands of wireless keyboards at sites like GlobalSources.com and Nextag.com, where you can search for the most popular keyboards on the market (see Resources below). You can even place an order through such comparison sites.

Tips & Warnings

  • If you are in the market for a new computer, consider purchasing the wireless keyboard with your computer to save some money. It is often more economical to buy a computer and its accessories in a bundle.
