Step1
Practice building sand castles and sand sculptures. Having an artistic eye will help, but you can only gain experience using sand by doing it over and over again.
Step2
Take a class or seminar via SandCastleCentral.com (see Resources below). Many resorts and even some local beaches also occasionally offer lessons in sand sculpting. Use the classes to refine your techniques and become more creative.
Step3
Talk to the instructors at the classes or seminars. Ask them about being a professional sand sculptor, so you get an idea about how the industry works and whether you would enjoy it.
Step4
Visit a sand sculpting competition, like the U.S. Open Sandcastle Competition to see the professionals in action (see Resources below). Alternatively, you can attend a demonstration. Sand sculptures are often built for special occasions such as resort openings, festivals and holidays because they can generate attention from the media and public.
Step5
Volunteer at local sand sculpting competitions and events. Even if you're not ready to compete, you can meet a lot of valuable contacts and learn a lot by helping out.
Step6
Ask the professionals for job leads when you feel your skills are developed enough. Talk to the people you see at classes, competitions and demonstrations.
Step7
Look at the websites of professional sculptors like Team Sandtastic to get inspiration and an idea of the business (see Resources below).
Step8
Compete in sand sculpting competitions. There are competitions for individuals and groups. Performing well is a sure to get noticed by professionals that can help you find a job with a sand sculpting company.
Step9
Build your own sculptures and business. If you can't find a job opening that fits your needs, try going out on your own. Have some professional fliers or business cards made. Head out to the beach and create some sculptures. People flock around good sand sculptures, which gives you an opportunity to hand out business cards or fliers. Advertise your services for weddings, corporate events and other occasions. You also can offer lessons on building sandcastles.
