This decision doesn't have to be hard, but it won't be a no-brainer either.

Champagne toasts and dinner wine can (sometimes unfortunately) play a large part in your guest's enjoyment of a wedding. So make sure you set the tone right with the perfect wine to cap off the perfect ceremony.

Difficulty: Moderate
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Someone who can guide you through some varietals of wine
  • An idea of what kind of food you'll be serving
  • An idea of what kind of wine you like/dislike
  • A wine budget
  • A knowledge of local wine vendors
  1. Step 1

Attend a menu tasting at your reception site and establish what your main course will be.

  2. Step 2

Ask the reception coordinator what kinds of wines couples who've chosen a similar menu typically select.

  3. Step 3

Visit various wine-and-food-pairing Web sites to get an idea of which varietals of wine you should consider.

  4. Step 4

Take a day or a weekend to go wine tasting near your reception site. Talk to the employees about your main dish, your likes and dislikes and your budget. Write down any suggestions or ideas they may have. You may also want to ask about a discount if you buy your wine in bulk from them.

  5. Step 5

Establish a white and red wine to serve with dinner. Though the food will be paired to only one of the two types of wine, most weddings provide their guests with both because of personal tastes.

Tips & Warnings
  • If you're planning to display a dinner menu, print the names, types and the vineyards, including the city, for the wines. You may also want to include a sentence about why you chose those particular wines, such as "This was Pete's grandfather's favorite type of wine. He never saw his grandfather without a glass of it when steak was around."
  • Make sure to ask your reception coordinator ahead of time about their alcohol policy, including whether any outside alcohol is allowed and how much their corkage fee is.
