Celtx is a free and downloadable script writing program along the lines of Final Draft that makes writing a play or screenplay a breeze. Getting and using Celtx is simple as well, just follow the below steps.

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • A computer with Internet
  1. Step 1

Go to the Celtx website (see Resources below).

  2. Step 2

    Click on "Download."

  3. Step 3

Find your language and operating system (Windows, OS X or Linux) and click the download button.

  4. Step 4

Save the program to your computer after it downloads.

  5. Step 5

Open the program and agree to all the conditions (click "Agree") to finish the download.

  6. Step 6

The Celtx window will pop up. Follow the instructions and drag the icon to your desktop.

  7. Step 7

The Celtx icon will now be on your desktop. Double click on it to start a project.

  8. Step 8

When it opens choose "Film," "Audio-Visual," "Theater," "Audio Play," "Storyboard" or "Text."

  9. Step 9

The next screen will pop up with your empty project. It will be set up to write the first line of your script (usually the scene heading). Type it in and begin to write.

  10. Step 10

The scroll bar at the upper left hand corner contains all the spacing particulars that you need (character, dialog, shot, etc). You can scroll the bar and select the proper spacing or you can press the "Return" key until the spacing is correct.

  11. Step 11

    ....

  12. Step 12

Continue writing until your masterpiece is done.

Tips & Warnings
  • Copying and pasting into Celtx from another program is very frustrating. Better to type it all in by hand.
