Your dog wants a quick reward or you want to provide a snack to ease their tummy between meals. Either your dog is on a special diet, or you are concerned about using treats outside their regular meals. Maybe the treat cupboard is bare just when you need it. Whatever the reason, you can microwave treats in minutes with your dog's favorite canned food.

Difficulty: Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Microwave Oven
  • Oven Plate
  • Canned Dog Food
  • Knife
  • Spoon
  • Spatula
  1. Step 1

Use canned dog food with loaf-style meal. Do not use stew-type food as it will not hold together for your doggy cookie dough.

  2. Step 2

If you are making many cookies, take out the whole loaf of dog food. Slice it thin, about 1/4-inch and no more than 1/2-inch thick. Cut each slice into wedges for individual treats. Put the wedges on the plate and microwave for about three minutes. When the wedges cool enough for handling, take them off the plate with a spatula. When completely cool, store them in a covered container in the refrigerator. These cookies will keep for up to a week. Do not freeze them.

  3. Step 3

If you are making a few cookies, take a teaspoon of food out of the can and put it on the paper or oven plate. Place spoon cookies an inch or two apart. Microwave for about two and a half minutes. Let cool, then spatula them off. These treats cool quickly and can be fed to your pooch within a couple of minutes. Do not feed hot treats to your dog. Refrigerate any uneaten cooked treats.

  4. Step 4

The dog bites should lift off the plate easily. If your treats stick, next time use a bit of canola oil or non-stick cooking spray on the plate before adding the dog food. Adjust your cooking times based on the dog food temperature. Canned food at room temperature will cook more quickly than refrigerated food.

Tips & Warnings
  • For dogs on prescription or special diets, this is an easy way to fix treats that fit their needs.
  • If the dog food splatters in the microwave, use a paper towel over the plate and add extra cooking time.
