You’ve come to that time in your life when you are more financially stable, when the path is set with most things. Your family choices have been made, your career is partially behind you and your life has a nice routine about it in a lot of respects. You may or may not be a grandparent, and life is full. However, the effects of time and life can be seen in higher cholesterol, more stringent medical exams by your doctors and a general slowing down of your metabolism and energy levels. It’s possible to avoid those health pitfalls that life has put before you with a little determination and effort. Beginning an exercise routine in your fifties is not only possible but can add to the enjoyment of your life.

Instructions

Difficulty: Moderate

Things You’ll Need:

  • Initiative

Step1
Start walking. It’s as simple as that. Every day, lace up your sneakers and head outdoors in the better warm weather for a half an hour a day. In colder temps, use an elliptical or treadmill indoors to get your cardio. Elliptical trainers are best for those with back or joint pain, and can provide a vigorous workout. Cardio increases lung capacity and strengthens your heart along with your body’s larger muscle groups. The endorphins that are released will improve your mood and can be a natural stress reliever.
Step2
Be sure to stretch for at least 10 minutes before and after walking or jogging to avoid cramps or torn ligaments. Stretching can also help you avoid injury and can decrease your back or joint pain.
Step3
Lift something. No, not the remote. Weight training fights off the gravity that pulls down our bodies and increases natural metabolism to help burn fat. Add a 30-minute weight regimen to your workout at least three times a week for the most benefit.
Step4
Again, be sure to stretch before and after exercise to avoid injury. Be sure of your form and concentrate on the movement more than how much weight you can lift. This is a quality, not quantity exercise.

Tips & Warnings

  • Always check with your doctor before beginning any exercise routine.
  • A stress test may be a good idea in the case of beginners in their fifties to determine starting levels for exercise.
