It’s been a wonderful few months with your new baby, full of milestones already. However, you’re noticing that your little one is not so happy lying in the crib for long amounts of time or gets fussy when in the bouncy seat. Is he trying to sit up, as soon as he’s awake in the morning, straining to do so? It’s time to teach baby to sit up.

Instructions

Difficulty: Easy

Things You’ll Need:

  • Baby about 6 months old
  • Tons of patience
  • Sense of humor
  • Boppy pillow

Step1
Start with some tummy time. As baby tries to find her way to the upright world, it’s important to strengthen those back and neck muscles. They make it possible for baby to sit. Lie baby on a cushy blanket on the floor on her belly. She may not like it at first, so don’t make it last too long the first few times. When she gets too fussy, end the lesson. While on her belly, turn her head if she needs help with that and talk calmly to her. Within a few days or weeks, she should be able to hold up her head for short periods of time.
Step2
Bring in the boppy. Boppy pillows are great inventions for baby. These half-moon pillows can be used for sleeping and feeding times, but are especially great when baby is learning to sit. Place the pillow on the floor, or even on your bed, and sit baby in the curve. The cushion will help support the lower back and help with balance. Give baby a toy to play with as he sits to help entertain him. You may be surprised how long a young baby can sit quietly playing on his own. You may even have a moment of down-time for yourself!
Step3
Try and try again. As your baby’s back and neck gain strength, you’ll see more and more times when he can pull himself up from a partially lying down position or catch himself from falling to the side. Try and have baby get some tummy time and time in the boppy pillow every day. Ten or 15 minutes each will do it. Soon your little one will be sitting up and playing pat-a-cake with you!

Tips & Warnings

  • Never leave baby in the boppy or during tummy time. Not only is it unsafe, but she needs to know that you’re there to help build her confidence.
