How to Second Line

A second line is a group of fans and onlookers who jump behind the main, sanctioned paraders in the traditional street dances of New Orleans. These dances are customarily put on by the Social (Aide) & Pleasure clubs, but there is no reason you can't create your own second line somewhere else.

Instructions

Things You'll Need:

• Costumes/dress clothes
• Instruments/umbrellas
• Dancing feet

1. Get dressed in your finest/most festive clothing. The brighter the colors, the better.

2. Grab your favorite musical instrument. If you don't have one, grab a decorative umbrella to twirl above your head.

3. Find some friends or strangers who are willing to join you and get out on the streets.

4. Form a single-file line behind the paraders. If there are no paraders, make your own parade.

5. If you have a musical instrument, play it. Otherwise, let your feet lead the way.

6. Dance and enjoy!
