A second line is a group of fans and onlookers who jump behind the main, sanctioned paraders in the traditional street dances of New Orleans. These dances are customarily put on by the Social (Aide) & Pleasure clubs, but there is no reason you can't create your own second line somewhere else.

Difficulty: Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Costumes/dress clothes
  • Instruments/umbrellas
  • Dancing feet
  1. Step 1

Get dressed in your finest/most festive clothing. The brighter the colors, the better.

  2. Step 2

Grab your favorite musical instrument. If you don't have one, grab a decorative umbrella to twirl above your head.

  3. Step 3

Find some friends or strangers who are willing to join you and get out on the streets.

  4. Step 4

Form a single-file line behind the paraders. If there are no paraders, make your own parade.

  5. Step 5

If you have a musical instrument, play it. Otherwise, let your feet lead the way.

  6. Step 6

    Dance and enjoy!
