As a professional living in a studio apartment, you may have very limited space. Frequently, your creativity and business savvy expand beyond the 4 walls in which you reside. Whether you are a freelancer, entrepreneur or small business owner, learn how to turn your studio apartment into a viable office space.

Instructions

Difficulty: Moderate

Things You’ll Need:

  • Desk organizers
  • Document file folders
  • Room dividers
  • Home phone line

Step1
Choose your work station wisely. This essential step is all about the traditional Chinese practice of feng shui. Create a space that is positive and in harmony with the way your apartment is designed. Try to make your workspace comfortable. Since your apartment is a studio, you may want to make it feel lived in yet professional.
Step2
Buy small document file folders. These types of folders can be purchased at an office supply store. They minimize and organize your documents and receipts. Document file folders also fit nicely on the floor.
Step3
Invest in a room divider. Dividers help section off limited space for the privacy effect.
Step4
Turn your home phone into a business line during office hours. Answer the phone in a professional manner, especially if you are not familiar with the person who is calling. Create a professional voicemail message which can be played at all times of the day and night.

Tips & Warnings

  • To save money, make your home phone line, your business line.
  • Get a post office box before ordering stationary and business cards with your address. It is important to keep your personal business separate from your work.
  • Make sure your environment is relatively quiet when answering unknown phone calls, unless your business practice is in child care, construction or automotive.
  • Turn your television volume down or off when working. Cable television can be a big distraction when you are trying to get your work done.
  • Learn how to set your limits! Beware of the temptation to work all the time. Down time is important.
  • Keep drinks and food away from your computer at all times. Since your kitchen table may double as a work desk, keep your drinks on the counter or far away from your keyboard. It is much easier to reach away for a drink than to buy another keyboard from an avoidable spill.
  • Always keep your personal receipts such as credit cards, clothing and electronics, separate from your business receipts.
