How to Plan and Throw an Inexpensive Party

  1. Step 1

    Write down your guest list.

Think of all the people you want to invite and write it all down. Take a moment and scroll through your cell phone contact list.

  2. Step 2

    Send out an email.

The best way to plan the size of your party is by sending out a mass email to your friends and family, suggesting the day and time of the party at least two weeks in advance. This will give your guests the chance to reschedule their plans, if needed. Email is also the most effective, because your friends will reply with a yea or nay instantly.

  3. Step 3

Cut coupons and shop at discount stores.

Cutting coupons is a great way to save money, especially when you use those coupons at discount stores. Another smart move will be to buy in bulk. Now is the time to get the economy size packs of cutlery, napkins and snacks.

  4. Step 4

    Begin planning your music selection.

The great thing about technology is that there are multiple ways to create a party play list. You can download from the Internet, use MP3s, MP4s and CDs. Another inexpensive way to get music is by having a friend burn a CD for the party.

  5. Step 5

Play charades, cards or a board game (if you already have it).

Not everyone will want to just stand around and socialize. Some people like to play games as a source of entertainment. You won’t have to go out and buy anything. Just whip out a deck of cards or a board game you have stuffed away in the closet.

  6. Step 6

Make appetizers that are filling and inexpensive.

Cold salads such as potato, macaroni, tri-color pasta or tuna salad are all filling. Another great idea is chips and salsa, sandwiches or buffalo wings.

Tips & Warnings
  • Suggest a pot luck party to cut down on the costs of food.
  • Purchase alcohol, juice and soda in bulk.
  • Pick up a Sunday newspaper and browse through the circulars for sales.
  • Always remember that some people who reserved will not show up.
  • There is nothing wrong with going generic as long as you are familiar with the products!
  • Use this party as an excuse to reunite with a long lost friend.
  • If you do not have a board game or cards, ask a friend to bring them.
  • Make sure you write down your guest list as opposed to emailing people first. This way you will not leave out anyone.
  • Forget the theme. Theme parties tend to be more expensive, because you have to purchase decorations.
