  1. Step 1

For a well-maintained lawn you need a lawn mower. As we like to take care of our garden, ourselves, we need to take care of our gardening equipments as well. It is very important to take good care of the lawn mower.

Following are some ways you can maintain the lawn mower.

Before cleaning the mower, start its engine and empty all the fuel from the tank. It is always better to disconnect the spark plug when cleaning, just to avoid any accidents. You need to change the oil regularly. Depending upon the machine type, the oil can be drained by removing the oil drain plug, which is located above the blade. After the plug is removed, allow the oil to completely drain. When you fix back the oil drain plug, fill the tank with new oil. You can use oil dipstick to fill the oil up to the "Full" mark. Every lawn mower engine has oil capacity of 20 ounces, approximately.

  2. Step 2

The blade of the lawn mower is very important, as it helps you in shaping up the lawn. If the blade isn't working well, it will not make your lawn look neat. A bad blade may cut the grass in an uneven manner. If you have a problem cutting the grass when it is wet, you should know that it is time to repair your blade. Dull blades consume more of fuel. Thus, a timely maintenance is a must for the lawn mower blade.

  3. Step 3

When you clean the blade, block it with a piece of wood so that it doesn't rotate. It is better if you use gloves to handle the blades or the edges may hurt you. Most of the mowers have two sided blades, one blade cuts the grass and the other picks it up. If you prefer to handle your own tools, you can maintain it yourself. If you are sharpening the blade, make sure you sharpen the entire cutting surface. It's good to sharpen the blade once in every month. Before you sharpen the blade make sure it is rust free, if there is any rust you can remove it by using rust remover or by simply scrubbing the metal with steel wool or an emery cloth.

If you are replacing the blade, remove the bolts holding the old blade. Place the new blade in the same manner as the old blade. The curved edges should be towards the housing. If the blades are not placed properly, it will not cut the grass in desired shape and it may cause an accident. To make sure that the mower holds the blade firmly, put back the bolts and washers. Make sure that the bolts are tight.

If you find it difficult to take care of the lawn mower, you can always send it for repairs to any of the service centers.
