So you know how to play San Juan. That's great, but do you know how to win? Here are some simple strategies that will help you on your quest for victory (points).

Difficulty: Moderately Challenging
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • San Juan card game
  • 1 to 3 opponents
  1. Step 1

Keep victory in sight. Whoever has the most victory points when the game ends wins, which means that building that monument might be worthwhile even though it doesn't produce any goods.

  2. Step 2

Use your buildings. Buildings have two purposes: to give you victory points and to give you bonuses during certain phases. If a building you built isn't being used, it's only doing half of its job. This means that if all your buildings are better when someone picks Trader, you should make sure Trader is picked every round.

  3. Step 3

Synergize. If you have a Carpenter building that gives you a bonus whenever you build, build a Quarry and double your discount. By stacking on buildings that effect the same phase, whenever that phase occurs, you will benefit greatly.

  4. Step 4

Read your opponents. If you know what roles they are likely to choose, try to be set up to take advantage of it. If Trader is going to be chosen, be sure you have some goods you can sell.

  5. Step 5

Diversify. You can't always know what roles will be chosen, but if you have buildings that help you for each role, you'll benefit no matter what is chosen.

  6. Step 6

Get the Guild Hall. Unfair though it may be, the Guild Hall is just better than the rest of the cards in the game. Acquire this building, five silver plants and five other production buildings and you'll be well on your way to victory.

Tips & Warnings
  • The first few buildings set the pace for the early game, so make yours count.
  • Don't help your opponents. If your opponent would greatly benefit from a role, reconsider choosing it.
