Hemorrhoids affect up to 75 percent of all Americans. They are swollen veins around the anus and rectum and can be internal, external or a combination of the two.

  1. Step 1

    Eat a high-fiber diet to prevent constipation, which is one of the primary causes of hemorrhoids. Wheat bran, nearly all vegetables, whole grains and beans are all high in fiber.

  2. Step 2

    Drink eight glasses of water a day.

  3. Step 3

    Get regular exercise. Walking is perfect if you don't feel like joining a gym.

  4. Step 4

    Avoid straining when you have a bowel movement.

  5. Step 5

    Try not to sit or stand for lengthy periods of time without changing position.

  6. Step 6

    Learn proper body mechanics when it comes to lifting heavy objects. Not only will you protect your back, but you can help ward off hemorrhoids.

    Get plenty of vitamin C in your diet. This is important for maintaining strong capillaries and veins.
