Eating healthy while traveling is often difficult, but it doesn’t have to be as hard as you think if you make smart choices about what food options are presented to you in an airport.

From Quick Guide: Airport Survival Guide
Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Explore as much as time will allow. While most airport terminals don’t offer a multitude of food choices, don’t resign yourself to that greasy slice of pizza without checking out all of your options. Wander as far away from the gate as you have time for, and check out all of the restaurants and kiosks.

  2. Step 2

Don’t just order a burger. McDonald’s, Wendy’s and other such burger-themed fast food options have started offering healthier salad and fruit options so you don’t have to rely on that greasy cheeseburger to tide you over until you reach real food.

  3. Step 3

Try to healthy up whatever you can find as much as possible if salads and fruits seem to be nowhere in sight. Choose grilled chicken over fried. Leave off the extra nacho cheese and other such unhealthy condiments. And pass on the fries that seem to be a staple of every fast food meal.

  4. Step 4

Venture to a sit-down restaurant if time permits. With a wider selection, you’ll be able to find a lot more than a Big Mac.

  5. Step 5

Arrive at the airport with pre-made snack options. Pack your own healthy sandwiches and snacks so you don’t even have to rely on the airport. While security won’t let you take canned or bottled beverages past security, you can often get through sandwiches and snacks with no problem. This leaves you only needing to fend for yourself beverage-wise and you can always find a bottle of water to buy once you’re through security.
