Having English riding chaps can be an essential piece of equipment for any equestrian who rides on a regular basis. Not only does it save your good riding britches and boots but it can also save your legs from getting rub marks or sores. The best type of English riding chaps to help chafing is the full set which covers your entire leg. These full chaps can be a little tricky for any first timer to put on so here are a few tips.

Difficulty: Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Tight pants to wear under chaps
  • Chaps that fit properly
  1. Step 1

Wear your tightest pair of barn jeans underneath your full chaps.

  2. Step 2

Make sure the legs are completely unzipped on the chaps and unbuckle the small front buckle. The larger buckle is generally in the back.

  3. Step 3

Start by wrapping the waistband of the chaps around your hips and fastening the small front buckle. If this is your first time putting on your chaps, be sure that the waistband fits snuggly around your hips.

  4. Step 4

Take the large flap of material and pull in down in front of you. Line the zipper up with the side seam in your pants.

  5. Step 5

Wrap your leg with the material by bringing it around the front of your leg to the back of your leg and toward the other half of the zipper.

  6. Step 6

Zip up the chaps starting from the top down. Fold the material on your pants to fit comfortably under your chaps. Sometime general chaps that are not custom fit can be too long. Take this extra material and fold it under so that it will not interfere with your riding.

  7. Step 7

Check to make sure that everything is comfortably set and nothing will rub you while you are riding. The best way to determine this is to walk around in your chaps and even bend your knee in them.
