Most sources now say title meta tags are the most important of the three main meta tags you’ll write for your website’s search engine optimization (SEO), the other two meta tags being the description meta tag and the keyword meta tag. The title meta tag is the string of words that appears at the top of your webpage, visible to both search engines and your visitors.

Difficulty: Moderately Challenging
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Determine your keywords or keyword phrases. Though you may think you know what they are, it’s critical that you check your keywords or keyword phrases using an online traffic tool. This tool will tell you how often people actually search for the keywords or keyword phrases you’ve selected. There are many tools of this kind on the Internet, one of which is linked to at the bottom of this page.

  2. Step 2

Select the top two or three for inclusion in your title meta tag (reserving the rest for your keyword meta tag).

  3. Step 3

Start with your keywords or keyword phrases, followed by your brand name. Unless yours is a highly-recognizable company or service that people will search for by name, do not lead with it in your title meta tag.

  4. Step 4

Write your title meta tag in 6 to 12 words, limited to no more than 63 characters. Yes, spaces count.

  5. Step 5

Don't look for a complete sentence in your title meta tag, just a string of words that gives search engines and visitors an idea of what you do and who you are while also, of course, incorporating your keywords or keyword phrases. For instance, “News and Commentary Blogs at Writing In The Light” or “News and Commentary Blogs – Writing In The Light” using a hyphen to separate your keywords from your brand name.

Tips & Warnings
  • Your title meta tag should not be a string of keywords or keyword phrases simply separated by commas. The only recommended punctuation is the hyphen.
  • Every page on your website serves a different purpose, so they all need a different title meta tag. So repeat Steps One through Five for each page.
  • Search engine optimization is a tricky task that’s both science and art. So do yourself a favor, and don’t get discouraged just because you don’t see the kind of results you want right away. Just keep learning all you can with the Other SEO Tools linked to below.
